A simple recipe for vegan toothpaste | Zero Waste

A simple recipe for vegan toothpaste | Zero Waste

All my life I didn’t know that toothpastes are unhealthy. I became interested in this subject when I started to live ecologically.

In the toothpaste the unhealthy is fluoride, which in excess can cause cancer, disturb the hormonal balance, cause thyroid problems, block the absorption of magnesium and even lower the level of intelligence. Fluoride is not only found in toothpaste, but also in a polluted environment.
The toothpaste also contains glycerine, through which minerals aren’t absorbed in the teeth, triclosan and perfumes that have a carcinogenic effect.
In addition, buying toothpaste in plastic packaging consumes its huge amount and heavily pollute the environment.
The homemade paste doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients, is organic and you can store it in a glass jar.

You can prepare it from several readily available ingredients:

White clay - contains a lot of minerals, cleans, polishes and whitens teeth
Baking soda - cleans teeth and refreshes the breath
Xylitol - fights harmful bacteria, gives a sweet taste
Sage and mint - herbs soothe irritations, refresh the breath and have a disinfecting effect
Coconut oil - has an antibacterial effect
Sea salt - contains a lot of minerals, limits the growth of bacteria
Peppermint Essential Oil - Refreshes the breath, has an antibacterial effect and prolongs the freshness of the paste

Herbal toothpaste:

• White clay - 2 tbsp
• Baking soda - 1 tsp
• Xylitol powder - 1 tbsp
• Salvia powder - 1 tsp
• Mint powder - 1 tsp
• Coconut oil - 1-2 tbsp
• Peppermint essential oil - 20 drops

Preparation:

I start preparing a toothpaste from powdered xylitol in a mortar (if you have xylitol powder, you can skip this step). Then pour it into a bowl to which I add clay, baking soda and herbs. I mix all the ingredients and gradually add the coconut oil until the consistency of the paste is formed. At the end I drop in the essential oil and translate the paste into the jar.

You can use this paste several times a day, and its expiration date is about 3 months.

Whitening toothpaste powder:

• Baking soda - 1 tbsp
• Xylitol powder - 1 tbsp
• White clay - 2 tbsp
• Sea salt (finely ground) - 1 tsp
• Peppermint essential oil - 20 drops

Preparation:

I start preparing paste by mixing soda, xylitol, clay and finely ground salt in a bowl. Then I add the essential oil and mix the paste again. The last step is to translate the paste into the jar.

This paste can be used once a week and must be used in about half a year.

Do you make your toothpaste at home?

Dorota
